Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is one of the several festivals celebrated by Hindus. Buddhists also celebrate this festival. If you wonder that what people do on Guru Purnima then you should read on. On the eve of Guru Purnima, followers or disciples of a Guru offer their regards and prayers to their respective Gurus (who guide them towards spirituality). Guru means guide and Purnima refers to a full moon day. It indicates that Guru Purnima occurs on the days of full moon. It is celebrated in Ashadh month (which falls between June to July) which is called shaka samvat according to the Hindu or Indian National calendar.

From ancient times, this festival holds special importance for all the Buddhists. It is celebrated from the time Lord Buddha offered his first sermon to the people in Sarnath. People who follow Hindu religion celebrate Guru Purnima to honor the supreme Guru Vyasa.  This festival carries forward the meaningful and strong relationship which exists between every Guru and Shishya. On the eve of Guru Purnima, disciples do satseva for their Gurus. It is a kind of service which makes the Guru feels more special. In simple words, the disciple on this day expresses his gratitude towards his Guru or teacher.
